One Word to Hold in the Gray Between – Writing 101 Assignment 3

The Gray Between

There is a place between, a gray between
life and death, a place where all crossroads lead.
Darkness hangs there and shadows lay the scene.
No light goes there unless kindled by need.
Hope, love and faith ignite a soul with fire
brightening the Gray Between. As you walk,
the darkness stalks, it feeds on emotions.
Hold your hope tight, its your torch, and don’t balk.
Cling to your love. Sing hymns while in motion,
Don’t pause or the Gray Between’ll suck you dry,
leave a darkening husk trapped in the woods
with no path to follow. Cold you will die,
never to return to the living woods.
The Gray Between takes what light you give; go
with hope, love, faith and never let them go.

Snatch of an ancient hymn warning travelers, attributed to the Pathfinders, who are said to have made extensive use of the pathways through the Gray Between.

In a later book of the Curse Breaker Saga, Sarn will cross the Gray Between.  I’ve also written several unfinished books that deal exclusively with races of the Magic Kind who make frequent use of the Gray Between.

    1. Thank you 🙂 it makes a fun twist that I can play with and having that one rule creates all kinds of chaos for folks who travel there. It’s the one place that requires magic to reach but no magic will aid anyone crossing it. 🙂
