Alight – Photo-Fiction #14

Alight

Seven years ago…

She’s a slave with a mark on her shoulder,
in an illegal lumir mine worked by
children but in her mind she’s free of this boulder,
with the boy whose iridescent green eyes
captured her heart. He’s special, finds gems like
none she’s ever seen; it makes the foreman
happy, so he spares them, his brother–tyke–
clinging to Green Eyes. Later, she’s dreamin’
somethin’ made of light, goodness and right.
It’s filling her up and carrying her
to Green Eyes;  in her hand’s a gem so bright,
he must have it; protection it confers.
It belongs to the boy with the green eyes
and with a kiss she knows, she’s lost Green Eyes.

Rocks tumbled, the ground quaked but she didn’t feel
anything but the light surrounding her
with wings, warm hands that separate and reel
soul into the light, leaving broken, her
body covered in stone. She knew it’d come
when they took Green Eyes away; special gifts
like his had to be protected. Free from
slavery she flew, carried like a gift
in angel arms, but one last glimpse, she begged,
of Green Eyes and his brother. The angel
dropped down to a campsite where Green Eyes slept,
his face purple with bruises, the angel
knelt, she wore his face; “my poor twin,” she wept.
“You aren’t free yet.” The angel rose, alight,
her twin’s hurts healed as they flew through the light.
