“Who did this to you?” Gregori demanded with more menace.

Sarn pushed to his feet, arms crossing under his cloak intent on pacing. Gregori gave him space but begrudged him every inch of it.

What to say? Tell Gregori that a bunch of idiots had jumped him? As if that would help his situation any. Explain that the tight confines of the tunnel had left no room to maneuver? Why bother when anything he said would sound like an excuse. No one ever believed him.

Sarn regarded his fists that bore not a single scratch because he hadn’t managed to land a single shot.

    3. Thank you! Some of my characters (Sarn, his son to name just two) showed up with names, personalities and histories intact. In fact they stole the story from another character. It’s better this way 🙂 My mind is stage; characters walk on and off it. I write down their parts 🙂

    5. It’s true! I create some characters but others invent themselves while I’m working or walking in the back of mind is stewing that scene wherein there needs to be a new character. And someone shows up to fill the gap. Sometimes I am not even consciously aware that there was a gap until that character wrote him or herself into the scene. There are some I create and they they take on a life of their own.

    9. and a little daunting. I don’t know of any other writer who invented part of their fantasy world before they went to grade school. It wasn’t until middle school that I started to wonder what lay beyond Shayari’s borders and where are those borders?

    11. I didn’t understand most of it at that age. I was seeing scenes from the end of the series. It took me two decades to find the beginning. I have really old diary entries bemoaning the fact that I had no idea where the story began that date from middle school. 🙂

    1. Thank you! You’ll get lots of views into his psyche (and just about everyone from his little son to his master psychoanalyzes him at some point– though Ran’s take is the most humorous and insightful). Sarn is the most introverted character in my fantasy universe. He does way more thinking than talking. You always know what’s on his mind. 🙂

    3. Yes, I have one character who’s constantly doing things that surprise me. He’s a act first think later sort, so I never know what he’s going to do until he does it! 🙂 Sarn is not like that.
