Some Kind of Monster

We check for monsters.
Under the bed, we saw eyes–
our eyes reflected.

Our monstrousness caught–
visible in mirror shard–
trapped under our skin.

Hold your cross up dear,
whisper prayers, “deliver us–”
our evil’s within.

Cross glows, burns our hands–
drop it, spin as it falls down,
lands on mirror shards.

Seven years’ bad luck,
blood drips down hands from the blow–
shattered mirror mocks.

Caught sanity’s flash,
fired like gunshots in the dark
but missed its target.

Monster within laughs,
extends its claws to snuff out–
the good in us, gone.

Luke Skywalker lied.
Light saber cold in our hands
We’re legion at last…

  1. “Sleep with one eye open” – can’t help but recall Enter Sandman while reading this. Love this so much, Melinda! I really love your writing and your poetry is certainly outstanding!

    1. Thank you 🙂 I’m glad to hear that someone misses Quest. I miss it too. I was going to finish up a piece for today but apartment issues prevented that. It should be back tomorrow 🙂 Thank you for asking 🙂

  2. Mel, oh Mel, I cannot decide if you write sonnets better, or senryus. I now to thee, my Queen. This was hauntingly beautiful. I love love love this:
    “Our monstrousness caught–
    visible in mirror shard–
    trapped under our skin.”
    I got goosebumps. No kidding!

    1. Thank you! I was thinking about “enter sandman” — I love that song by the way.
When I wrote that line about the good in you, gone, I heard that scene in episode 6 where Luke tells Darth “I feel the good in you” and well, I had to write that. Darth Vader was a monster after all and episodes 1-3 prove that the monster really was inside him. Such is the bizarre paths my brain walks 🙂 Usually I curb it so the connections make sense to readers 🙂
