Gone: Emotional ABCs

The ABCs of Emotion: Gone

Conscious decision
left without any warning
why’d you go away?

No trace left behind
no evidence left to see
emptiness remains.

Life steamrolls on, sun rising and setting.
Its fabric’s torn, shredded, where you belong.
Set my keys and badge on the tray resting
by stacks of unread mail,  there’s a blues song
on the radio blaring in my neighbor’s flat.
I stroke his cheshire cat, set my gun belt
down on the table, grab a beer and splat!
Life blows a bullet hole in my vest, welts
form under its kevlar; I slide to floor
strain to reach my gun, cat hisses at gun
fire chewing through my eyesore of a door.
Chartreuse wood chips fly; drive-bys are no fun.
Pain squeezes my chest and my hand falls short–
can’t reach gun or phone, no help for this sport.

Shotgun sprays bullets
engine revs and speeds away
neighbor saves the day.

I’m not gone yet
not erased like my partner
life’s not rubbed me out.

This is a fictional tale. I work in IT not law enforcement but I have read a lot of police dramas this month, so worry not! This is not real.

  1. Love me a good police story and you have weaved a perfect one if mix verse. I’ve said it before and I will repeat it here, you are the queen of mixing poetic forms. Bravo, my friend!

  2. A tale that feels so true because you tell it so skilfully. Which cop story have you been listening to this time? Bosch? Reacher? Wait Reacher isn’t a cop but he does have his own law.

    1. well that’s what happens after they arrest you…you go behind bars…I have seen/read enough cop dramas to know and the first Jack Reacher book convinced me I never want to be arrested! Yikes!

    2. It was intense. He was arrested for a crime he didn’t do, interrogated and put in prison but he didn’t end up in a holding cell. He ended up mixed in with the general population and they tried to kill him.

    1. Thank you, I’m sorry for the confusion! I added a rider to make it clearer that this isn’t me. I have read (ahem listened to) a lot of police dramas this month so I had cops on the brain 🙂

    2. No apologies necessary 🙂 There are a few of us who are true-crime (or cop drama) fans–so it’s take a 2nd read, or simply asking, to make sure it’s not the author’s real experience. Because we care 🙂
