Home: Emotional ABCs

The ABCs of Emotion: Home

Home, hearth, family–
empty flat with ‘lectric heat
for my aching feet

No crackling fire waits
no scent of dinner cooking
stench of leftovers

My shoulderbag falls, memories do rove
strike linoleum, makes me think of home
my flat’s still dark, no, sauce simmers on stove
no food in fridge, no, garlic bread scent roams
no salad things, no, cheese grated for sauce
no laughter or talk, plates clink as they’re set
in the microwave, napkins folded cross
plates that spin and heat, grace said on a bet
stand in kitchen no, place at table
I didn’t cleaned it off, spoon gravy on all
grab a cup from stack, there’s no time table
I stand as I eat, remember it all
empty apartment, house filled with fam’ly
I miss the hubbub, laughter and jollies.

Flip open laptop
cue up those internet sites
time to make fam’ly

Eat no more alone
spend no more time in mem’ry
build myself a home.

I cleaved another sonnet.

  1. Senryu and clever cleave in sonnet – stunning work, Melinda. Your creative prowess leaves me in awe. Since first seeing the cleave on Annie’s blog I have wanted to write one but I have been too scared to try it. Many of us have online families and have to return home to the quiet of an empty home. While the depth of longing is weaved throughout your lines, there is also an air of contentment, that those aching feet will find solace in the comfort of slippers as they rest on an ottoman while you connect with your ;family’. Brilliant writing, my friend!

    1. I heard that a couple of times already. That is why I really have no plans of moving out. haha. Or even working out of the country. A lot of Filipinos dream of that, but that excludes me. 😀

  2. I felt the emotions deeply through this beautiful cleave and sonnet! Wow! You are a skilled writer, a honest poet of feelings, and a master at any form.
Sending you lots of hugs! 🙂

  3. Yes, you did cleave another Sonnet. You’re getting better at it, too. You probably do it with your eyes closed now – heck, maybe in your dreams.
I can so feel the longing of home here. I used to live alone for years, oh many years ago, renting a unit near my office when I first started working. I remember what it was like – coming home to an empty place after a long day at work. Sending you good vibes and love, my BP.

    1. Thank you 🙂 most of the time I like living alone. They’re a few days when I come home wishing there was someone there though. This sonnet was harder to Cleave than the other one believe it or not! 🙂
