Cup’a Days

Cup’a Days

Shells rattle, feet tap
keep the time ‘lest we forget
to linger a bit.

Stretch the clouds to fill
wedgewood cups that brim with sun
leave a span of blue.

Rest my fingers, warm
against chipped ceramic mugs
where gray days are hid.

Lost my reflection
my features blurred by ripples
pain dropped in my cup.

Through a hole life runs
its banded colors my days
my cup empties fast.

Finger plugs the hole
what’s left are days yet to live
tomorrow’s still cupped.

Yesterdays puddle
left to drip off the table
old days lost to sight.

First sip of today
bittersweet, chance of lightning
last sip, restless night.

I’ve forgotten you
memories unwind the past
it’s all unraveled.

Pictures fading fast
ink lightening back to white
no pixels for you.

Digital camera
never captured your visage
no lasting record.

You’re gone with college
spent like month old pink roses
you’re both in the trash.

I still have your debt
its shadow darkens my door.
A good deed gone bad.

  1. Such a poignant poem! Beautifully described feelings. I love these lines:

    “Stretch the clouds to fill
wedgewood cups that brim with sun
    leave a span of blue.”

    and

    “I’ve forgotten you
    memories unwind the past
    it’s all unraveled.”

    Very moving, Melinda!

  2. Wonderful imagery and I like the rhythm. I like how you start with this chipped tea cup and how her memories are “bittersweet” but she has moved on from him, doesn’t have to put up with him. Sad he left her in debt. Great writing Melinda.
