Grace and Space

Are you giving yourself #permission to be imperfectly you? @MelindaKucsera

Bikurgurl and I had a conversation about Grace and Space on the comments section of my post, Permission to Be. We chatted about the idea of giving ourselves ‘Space and Grace”. Bikurgurl then took our conversation to the next level and fashioned a wonderful post that examines that idea of ‘Space and Grace‘ through the lens of her experience:

These days, it’s all about grace and space.

Space and GraceWe try to remind each other daily — if we don’t give ourselves grace and space, how can we expect anyone else to do so? If we demand it of ourselves, we’ll demand others give us this too…we’ll be sending out the messages to the world we wish to receive. Circling back to Melinda’s post — giving yourself Permission to Be – it’s a a beautiful thing! I call it Grace and Space — you call it what works for you!

    1. For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, not by works so that no man can boast, it is the gift of God through eternal life Ephesians 2:8-9. I think that’s right.

Also, being okay with making mistakes and allowing yourself not to be perfect.

    2. I’m going to quote you on that! Your quote is awesome. You talk about grace from God and grace from within which is perfect for my next post! Is there anything else you would like to say about either source of grace?

    3. I think since God showed us such grace, in giving us faith in his son Jesus, we learn to give ourselves grace. ” But God demonstrates his love for us in this, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us Romans 5:8.

Grace is an undeserved gift, its mercy. We should demonstrate mercy when dealing with people and be full of grace towards them. We need to go easy on ourselves too, remembering we are to made special and uniquely talented from anyone else on earth, despite our flaws and imperfections. This means we show kindness and forgiveness to others and especially ourselves. God forgave us, so we can forgive ourselves knowing that although we can’t be perfect beings, we need do only the best we can at the time. God is perfect, we cannot be so revel in the flaws which make our daily lives real and difficult, learn and grow, knowing you never have to be as perfect as you believe. Your best at any given time is always good enough. Perfection is not required, it’s a hopeless pursuit. The space to give yourself grace means being content with what you are able.

    4. Grace I relate with a lot of Lutheran teachings when I was young, so for me that really comes to mind 🙂

    1. Would you like to contribute a quote or poem on the subject of giving one’s self grace and space? I’m doing a follow on post with more perspectives gathered from the wonderful members of the blogosphere. 🙂

  1. Thank you so much for the reblog! Your initial post gave me the inspiration to write a bit about my thoughts…especially after my surgeries last year, getting older, having young men I’m raising…my perspective continues to shift to giving myself, and others, Space and Grace!

    1. I want to write more too. I actually want to crowd source a post–find out what ‘giving yourself grace and space’ means to other bloggers. I think that could be a meaning conversation.

    2. Agreed! I’ve made it priority this season with my writing classes and my own children {who are also my homeschool students!}…we’re all too hard on ourselves. Looking forward to writing more 🙂

    3. It’s a process — from time to time, I still find myself feeling negative when I’m not planning, working towards my goals, over-committed, or overwhelmed. Coming back to center and readjusting — it’s a process that needs to be part of the routine. I find that Sundays going to church are a great re-set {I take my notebook and take notes on sermons – it feels so much more engaging when I do}, practice yoga, stop everything to engage with my children….Starting the day off with quiet time {when I don’t stay up writing or blogging!} also helps me keep my center. Looking forward to our collaboration 🙂

    4. Oh wow those are great ideas. I take walks, two a day usually. When the negativity gets too bad I slap in some headphones, queue up a good audio book and get lost in story for awhile. When I stop walking, I find the negativity has gone away. 🙂 I am looking forward to collaborating too!

    1. The courage to accept the fact that I’m not perfect (don’t tell the twenty year-old me!), the will to respect and allow myself space (and time, and pace) to grow, to make mistakes.

    2. Actually I borrowed the technique from another site. It’s purely a manual process. It allows folks to click to tweet the exact text shown 🙂 You can see how i did it if you look at the page code for this webpage 🙂

    4. Agreed! I am thrilled this resonates with you – and so many other writers! Self acceptance leads to acceptance of others. You get what you give, but in this case, I feel like our synergy is giving so much more — many thanks, my friend!

    5. Thank you 🙂 It is okay if I quote your 3 lines post? It dovetails so perfectly with a quote Mandibelle 16 gave me that I built an interview kind of post talking about grace coming from without and then being harnessed by us.

    6. I can totally relate! Part of the process is learning which new piece of information to take in and which one to discard. I used to take it all in, ruminate, and drive myself crazy. 😀

    7. Information overload – I try to steer clear of that, but get sucked in … Analysis Paralysis usually ensues 😉 {It’s one of the topics of an upcoming post!}
