Jerlo watched the lanky enigma [Sarn] exit and then shut the door. He picked up a metal bowl and opened the door that connected his inner office to his sitting room. Setting the bowl down on the sill, he cracked the window open and tore up the pages his second had torn out of the travelers’ register. He pulled on thick gloves, removed one of the red lumir stones from the hearth and touched it to the pile. In less than a minute, a tiny fire bobbed in the breeze as it consumed those pages and consigned whatever information they had held to oblivion.

He watched the smoke curl out of his stained glass window; it made the blue dragon inlaid in its panes look like it skimmed the thin clouds of the upper atmosphere. A silver glow in the west rose higher until the Queen of All trees, her branches quaking with anger, stood on the side of a mountain miles distant. She shook her luminous branches at him in mute protest.

β€œSarn belongs to us you overgrown weed. Find another mage for your schemes.” Jerlo blew out the flames, shook the ashes into a westerly breeze and shut the window. He returned to his desk and slumped down into his padded chair. What the hell was he going to do with that Kid?
