“Who’re you talking to? Your father isn’t here,” Uncle Miren said without even looking up from the page before him.

“Papa come back!”

Ran balled his hands into fists. He wanted Papa to come back right now. Threads of magic drifted in the musty air like pale green veils. They represented a connection to Papa. Ran grasped hold of them, twining his little fingers in the gossamer threads, gathering them up as he walked backwards. He ignored his uncle’s continued demands since his uncle had given him the cold shoulder for the last two bells. Now it was his uncle’s turn on the receiving end and his uncle didn’t like the silent treatment he gave him one bit. Too bad, Uncle Miren should have been nicer.

Giving the remnants of Papa’s magic a good tug, Ran smiled even though he met considerable resistance. He had a line on Papa and that contented him. Curling up with his stuffed bear, he clutched that shimmering cord. He coiled it around himself, anchoring it to him and him to Papa.

Papa would return soon. He had to come back. Ran pulled on the promise that bound them giving Papa a firm reminder that he was waiting. Bear’s button eyes reflected his approval, not that the boy had needed it.

After a few minutes more of asking questions that went unanswered, Uncle Miren threw up his hands in disgust. He muttered something about ungrateful brats and slammed his books around on the table. His uncle huffed, and then settled back into working on his homework.

Score one for Team Bear. Ran hid a smile in Bear’s furry belly and maybe a giggle or two at getting a rise out of his uncle. All the while, he continued reeling in his missing Papa. It didn’t soothe the ache left by his parting hours ago. Only Papa’s return could salve that wound.

So Ran kept pulling and begging Papa to hurry in whispers muffled by his trusty Bear. Bear’s soft nap caught a stray tear or two as well and that was okay. Bear would never tell a soul about them, especially not his uncle.
