A Ghost in the Stairwell

*Based on a scene from Curse Breaker: Enchanted

Sarn’s eyes blazed, and their emerald brilliance devoured the darkness, revealing steps. Against the sliver of unrelieved black at the stair’s top, a pale shape materialized.

“Let me pass. I’m in enough trouble as it is.”

The ghost ignored his plea and blurred, slamming into his chest. Sarn struggled to breathe as intense cold stabbed him. Slumping onto a step, Sarn shivered as the ghost tore out of his back. A small gray hand seized his hood throwing it back and the ghost’s icy fingers gained solidity as they traced the scar on his cheek.

“What are you? Why are you chasing me?”

The specter shaped frantic words silenced by death as it faded away. The arctic cold gripping the stairwell dissipated as Sarn rose and hauled ass out of there.

*I wrote so many stair scenes in that book and its sequel (Faceted) that I just can’t write anymore. But I’ll have to unless I find a way to shoehorn an elevator into the stronghold where he lives. This is not the actual scene from the book but it’s close.
