Almost Lovers

(Continues from Eternal)

I evaded the next jab by swinging around the tether I clung to, leaving it vulnerable. (I’m still climbing out of hell for those just joining us.) The next slash bit into my spiritual tether and I howled. Pain wracked my body and the nothingness in my head sparked with images and not the helpful variety. I needed a way to hurt my pursuer instead, my ghost brain coughed up a hazy view of an office. Great, I was about to lose my unlife during a montage of mundanity.

Sitting on the desk’s edge was the man from the elevator lobby. He brushed tears from those velvety eyes but I saw the grief-broken soul beyond.

We were almost lovers he and I,
lost in a world of desire,
but I was his new hire.
So we burned in a pyre
kindled by lust mired
in the real world briar.
Its thorns kept us attired,
and in a corporate quagmire.
we yearned to fly higher
let civility burn in the fire,
the wildfire we acquired
when our relationship misfired.

Our hearts remained in a fine frenzy. Then he looked at me and his eyes widened. His hand grasped my fraying  tether. It was anchored where I’d left my heart—in a chest, I’d never touched. And through the love we both denied, my tether passed from his heart to the God he served. His unbuttoned collar, missing its tie, displayed a few black wisps and a shining cross. Its holy light fell upon me burning out the darkness in my head and through my eyes it shone, lighting up the demon charging at my spiritual home.
