Betrayal detailed in fabric

(Continues from Almost Lovers)

The demon sizzled in my fire—
a holy pyre sent to retire
one crispy demon and his sire,

through the man, I’d loved and inspired.
I climbed that spiritual wire
joining our heart strings with sapphire,
giving my spirit wings to fly higher.
I soared out of hellfire’s gyre
toward my beloved Esquire,
ready to inquire,
but death had sent things haywire
separating me from him by life’s fire.
It burned in him, but I’d expired.

Still, I flew straight toward the clean cut man crushed by grief. And the details in the fabric struck me as I touched down. Jewel bright buttons flashed like the gems on the one knife capable of maiming a ghost. Silver threads running through his shirt and slacks picked up the fluorescent glow of the lamp illuminating a brief on his desk blotter.

An uneasy feeling made me stop on the threshold with one hand on my tether and the other touching a nameplate. My fingers phased through each letter I traced, Jason M. Raz, Esquire. Behind my crush, lying innocently among a pile of envelopes was no letter opener. It was the twin of the knife the demon had just used to flay me.

“Oh, Jason, what have you done?”

Expecting no answer, I stood there uncertain where to go. What should I do now? Had my one-time crush betrayed me? I flinched when Jason’s hand wrapped around the knife’s hilt, and he raised it.
