About the Riders of the Apocalypse Series’ World

What is the magic system in the Riders of the Apocalypse Series?

The magic system in this series is defined as a “sliding scale” or spectrum where magic is synonymous with life.

Types of Magic:

  • Light Magic: Visible elemental magic (e.g., Sarn’s earth magic or Fay’s fire magic).
  • Dark Magic: Invisible magic, such as Fay’s ability to see the future.
  • Divine/Angelic Power: Angels wield “grace,” and falling to the dark side (like Malachiah) changes an angel’s nature and powers

How does the magic system in the Riders of the Apocalypse Series work?

  • The Spectrum: On one end of the spectrum are Mages (who wield high levels of magic, usually elemental like Earth or Fire). On the opposite end are Nulls (who negate magic) and Necromancy (death magic).
  • Binding Promises: This is the most crucial rule for mages. For a mage like Sarn, “promises are binding.” If a mage breaks their word, the broken oath becomes the “truth” and their original oath a “lie.” Since mages are soul-bound to the truth, this contradiction can kill them.
  • The Source: Magic is created by sentient microbes called Andurai. Their antithesis absorbs magic (often appearing as black lumir crystals).

Is the Riders of the Apocalypse Series appropriate for Young Adults?

Yes. The series fits well within the Young Adult (YA) or New Adult categories.

  • Protagonists: The main characters are young. Sovvan died as a child (age 7) but has existed as a ghost for 14 years, while her twin brother Sarn is in his early twenties,.
  • Themes: The story focuses on family loyalty, finding one’s identity, dealing with trauma/loss, and the struggle to do what is right in a dangerous world.
  • Tone: The narrative voice is often conversational and includes humor (“snark”), typical of modern YA fantasy

Who are the main characters?

  • Sovvan: The narrator and protagonist. She is Sarn’s twin sister who died young. She begins as a ghost in the “Gray Between” (afterlife) but evolves into a powerful angel/ghost hybrid, eventually becoming an Archangel and the new Angel of Death,,.
  • Sarn: Sovvan’s twin brother. He is a powerful earth mage and a “Curse Breaker” who struggles with the burden of his magic and raising his son alone.
  • Ran: Sarn’s young son (Sovvan’s nephew). He can see ghosts and angels and often summons Sovvan when he is scared.
  • Fay (Phadrassen): An ancient, former goddess of Fate and Fire. She is the mother of many demigods and often intervenes to help Sovvan and Sarn. She shares her body with a dragon spirit.
  • Misriah: Sarn’s guardian angel. She is a warrior angel who initially tries to stop Sovvan from interfering but becomes her close ally.
  • Malachiah: Sovvan’s former guardian angel who fell from grace. He is a primary antagonist working to break the seals and bring about the Apocalypse.
  • The Adversary: The devil. He seeks to enter the Mortal World and possess Sarn to use his magic.

What genre and tropes are in the Riders of the Apocalypse Series?

Genre:

  • The books are described as High Fantasy Action/Adventure with a Christian bent. They feature a blend of epic fantasy elements (dragons, magic swords) with religious cosmology (angels, demons, God, the Apocalypse).

Tropes:

  • The Chosen One: Sarn is a “Curse Breaker,” a rare type of mage born under two curses.
  • Sibling Bond: The connection between twins Sovvan and Sarn is a central plot device; they are linked by a “chain of promises” across life and death.
  • Good vs. Evil: A literal battle against the Devil (the Adversary) and the forces of Hell.
  • The Apocalypse: The series deals with the breaking of the seven seals and the release of the Riders of the Apocalypse

Do I need to read the Riders of the Apocalypse Series books in order?

Yes, you should read these books in order. The plot is continuous, following Sovvan’s evolution and the escalating stakes of the Apocalypse.

Note: This series runs parallel to the main Curse Breaker series. For example, Chaos Rises takes place simultaneously with Curse Breaker books 8-12
