Blog – Takeover Day 5

Hello all!

I’m baaaaaaaack! Did you miss me? This is Ran, son of Sarn, if you hadn’t guessed.

Sorry for the long absence. The portal I’ve been using refused to expand enough to allow me unfettered access to Melinda’s laptop. So I was stuck watching our loveable author work herself to exhaustion creating her signature holiday treats. (They are delicious by the way. I relieved her of a couple dozen or so. Don’t worry, I shared the spoils around on our side of the portal.)

This year she decided to make drunken cake balls to use up the ridiculous amount of flours (yes flours plural) she had bought and then never found a use for. (What the hell is teff and why would any-y-one grind it into a flour?) o_0

Yes, so our tireless creator spent an unreasonable number of hours in her kitchen mixing up these tasty treats. And I do mean mixing. She had this cool gadget to whip those suckers into submission. If only I could have squeezed more than my thumb through the portal, what fun I’d have had with that device! But alas, the portal’s size and porousness depends upon our creator.

The more she thinks about us and our world, the more permeable the barriers between your sorry excuse for a ‘real world’ and our much more awesome one become. (All her stories take place in or intersect with my world and its nearest neighbor, but you knew that already.)

So it’s her fault you haven’t heard from me. While she worked her fingers to the bone, she listened to these awful things called ‘audiobooks’ and thought very little about us. We’re not happy about that and right after I finish this post, I’m going to sabotage her Audible account so she can’t downloadย any more audiobooks. That’ll teach her. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Since you can’t enjoy the fruits of her candy/cake ball making, I have something even better to share and they’re non-caloric! Yay for electronic goodies!

Mel’s been hard at work redesigning our debut book’s cover AND she’s fin-a-lly settled something that resembles an editorial calendar. And you know what? It features a lot of me. So there’ll be plenty more opportunities this year for you to read about the adventures of my younger self! ๐Ÿ™‚

Here’s the details thus far:

Coming in 2017

  1. Curse Breaker: Haunted & Curse Breaker: Hunted, two prequel novellas which will be free! Both are set before Enchanted.
    1. Inย Hunted,ย you’ll find out why Bear is so awesome! (Bear approves of this.)
    2. Haunted was supposed to have a holiday focus, but Mel’s work schedule makes getting the book out by Christmas unlikely though we are encouraging her to try. You should encourage her too. Get your friends to buy Enchantedย so we can convice her to take unpaid vacation time to work on our stories! ๐Ÿ™‚
  2. Rerelease of Curse Breaker: Enchantedย with new cover art
  3. Publish Curse Breaker: Faceted –ย if you thought Enchantedย ended with a magical bang, just wait until you see what magical trouble my dad gets into this one! It has an EPIC ending and you get to meet some of my favorite people!
  4. Curse Breaker: Hallowed ย –ย features my dad’s friend Shade and the epic afterlife quest Shade takes to earn redemption.ย Of course, dad and I will be in this story holding down the side of the living. Melinda doesn’t know if this will be a novella or a full length novel since she built a complicated place for our souls to go after death. (The lands of Ever are way more than the far green country Nolo told my dad about at the end of Enchanted.ย Forgive his ignorance.)
  5. Publish Curse Breaker: Jousted –ย magical monsters crash a joust my dad and I attend unleashing a full novel’s worth of mayhem. Need I say more?ย ย

She has plans for other characters (that ghost fellow haunting the blog lately) but they aren’t important because those stories don’t involve me.

Want more goodies?

Then more you shall have! I found where Melinda’s hiding the new cover designs she’s working on. Below are the most recent drafts of the covers of her upcoming books:

What do you think? See you in the comments!

  1. Hi Ran,

Let’s blame Mel. Okay. I am blaming her with you. Because you are back, come here now let me pinch pinch pinch your cheeks! Argh youuuu are too adorable! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

Thank you for sharing with us these lovely updates. Let’s not be hard with Mel because she is all over the place! Does she rest? Like really??

Those covers rooooock!! And I am excited to know more about Shade. I know Shade betrayed (OOOOPPPSSSSS) but… I love Shade! His (or her?) poetic dialogues are just AWESOME!

But yea, Ran. You are the MOST awesome, EVER! ๐Ÿ˜€

    Those covers are AWESOOOOOOOOOOOOOOME!!!
(but yes, Ran, not more awesome than you! :D)

    1. Hello there! I’m so glad you enjoy my updates. Yes she does sleep but never often nor enough. I love the covers too! I wish she’d stop tinkering with them. They are awesome as is! I will pretend you didn’t profess admiration for Shade. I still have nightmares about the shadow monster. Shudder If only I had my powers, I could have fixed things. But they didn’t come in until years after the Shade incident. So my poor dad was left to face a demon on his own without the proper magic to do much about a demon possession. Shade will have more poetic dialogues since that’s how Shade talks. (Sorry for the spoilers but really, if you, the person other than the lovely Rosema reading this comment, haven’t read Curse Breaker: Enchanted yet–what are you waiting for? It’s awesome!)
uh-oh, Mel’s logging in from work! I better skedaddle. It’s lovely to meet you! – Ran, Son of Sarn.

You put nothing but smiles to my face. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ Sorry about Shade spoiler. HAHA. I know you despise him.. but my poetess heart loves how he talks. ๐Ÿ˜€
You behave, Ran! Keep being so adorable!

        1. Aw thank you! I don’t despise Shade. But the whole shadow monster incident is hard to forget. I was only 4 at the time! I will keep being me and since I am adorable, I will remain so for all time ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. Melinda these are all great! I’m drawn to #3 (numbering to the right ). I know it’s your current book. The reason is it has a balance to its design, the green leaves or whatever on the top and bottom. Plus, Sarn’s green eyes having that small amount of green colour in between it works well. In art we learned the best paintings etc work in groups of three and five etc. I think that’s why this cover works – three areas of green provide that balance.

I’m also drawn to #5 on the bottom row for Hallowed. But I’m wondering if it’s possible to somehow put a bit of green in the top right corner, to give more balance to the cover.
For #1 I find the swirls although pretty, distracting. It’s difficult to see the title through the swirls. For #2 I love the interesting image of the half bear. I think you need some kind of green at the bottom for balance.

I like #4 for faceted quite a lot as well. I’d play with the jewel size. It might be perfect but it might be a bit big. I’m not sure. But generally, it’s a great cover.

Cover #6 is also good and balances well. The image is disturbing a bit, but it works. I think that’s the effect you’re going for.

Excellent job on all, I’m impressed yet again ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thank you Mandy for your thorough assessment. You are an absolute treasure and I am so fortunate to know you. You are right about the swirls obscuring the title for #1. I will fix that. I can’t believe I didn’t see it! But then I was looking at it at 100% not shrunken down. I’ll find something for #2. I have an idea for #5. I shrank the jewel in #4. I had three designers at my job help me tweak it. I’ll polish the other ones you mentioned. Again thank you so much for sharing your artistic eye. I really appreciate it!

  3. Whoa Mel! This is beyond impressive! That’s a lot of work and stories coming our way. How did you find the time?! Did you discover a time machine or something? What’s your secret?

The cover designs look amazing! Absolutely in love with all of them including the new one for Enchanted. Well done!

    1. Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚ I still have a lot of work to do. I have to write Haunted, Hunted and Hallowed for starters and finish Faceted & Jousted. But winter is coming and I loathe the cold weather, so no problem there. I’m glad the covers are a hit. I worked really hard to make them reflect the series and to make them striking. Thanks to a certain character, I’m now locked into this! I better get back to writing–er–I mean working. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        1. Thank you! I’m so glad you like the new covers. I’m still tweaking little things here and there about them but this is the general direction the series is going visually speaking. I do love this universe. I’ve lived in it for more than 3 decades.
