We check for monsters.
Under the bed, we saw eyes–
our eyes reflected.
Our monstrousness caught–
visible in mirror shard–
trapped under our skin.
Hold your cross up dear,
whisper prayers, “deliver us–”
ourย evil’s within.
Cross glows, burns our hands–
drop it, spin as it falls down,
lands on mirror shards.
Seven years’ bad luck,
blood drips down hands from the blow–
shattered mirror mocks.
Caughtย sanity’s flash,
fired like gunshots in the dark
but missed its target.
Monster within laughs,
extends its claws to snuff out–
the good in us,ย gone.
Luke Skywalker lied.
Light saber cold in our hands
We’re legion at last…

“Sleep with one eye open” – can’t help but recall Enter Sandman while reading this. Love this so much, Melinda! I really love your writing and your poetry is certainly outstanding!
Thank you, I love that song and it was running through my head when I wrote this ๐ glad you liked it
You are welcome! me too! ๐
Standalone poems weaving one coherent thrilling piece. Great, as always! ๐
P.S.
I kinda miss Quest?? ๐ ๐ ๐
Thank you ๐ I’m glad to hear that someone misses Quest. I miss it too. I was going to finish up a piece for today but apartment issues prevented that. It should be back tomorrow ๐ Thank you for asking ๐
i like it , thx
๐
Feel the worrisome spirit of the poem, really cool…legion we are…
Thank you ๐
I love that 2nd stanza Melinda this is powerful and disturbing piece, perfectly in sync with the collage
Thank you! I saw it and the stanza just kind of fell out from there ๐ thanks for a such a great prompt!
Great write, Melinda–truly, the monsters are within us. I’ve seen and heard my own.
heard? oh dear, that doesn’t sound good! Thank you!
Welcome ๐
๐
Gorgeous, Poetess. Each stanza can stand on its own and yet beautifully tells the story when all woven together. Loved it.
Thank you! ๐ it was kind of stream of consciousness
The good stream ๐
๐ yay!
An excellent ‘write’ Melinda. Love the rhythm, the flow and imagery….. ๐ Hugs!
Thank you! the imagery was part of the prompt, so I can only take credit for the ramblings of my disturbed mind ๐
Creatively productive ‘disturbed mind’. ๐ Hugs!
๐ the best kind? Hugs to you too ๐
Yeah! Keep Going….. ๐ Hugs!
Roger that! ๐ Hugs!
Mel, oh Mel, I cannot decide if you write sonnets better, or senryus. I now to thee, my Queen. This was hauntingly beautiful. I love love love this:
“Our monstrousness caughtโ
visible in mirror shardโ
trapped under our skin.”
I got goosebumps. No kidding!
Thank you! I got goosebumps too! I saw that image in my head and shuddered as I typed ๐ My imagination is too vivid sometimes ๐
Isn’t that a good thing?
I guess?
Don’t guess. KNOW so
๐ if you say so ๐
a poem from you after a long time! brilliant as ever! the beginning reminded me of the Enter Sandman but the Star Wars finishing touch is equally mesmerizing!
Thank you! I was thinking about “enter sandman” — I love that song by the way.
When I wrote that line about the good in you, gone, I heard that scene in episode 6 where Luke tells Darth “I feel the good in you” and well, I had to write that. Darth Vader was a monster after all and episodes 1-3 prove that the monster really was inside him. Such is the bizarre paths my brain walks ๐ Usually I curb it so the connections make sense to readers ๐
it was not bizarre at all…. I think Darth and Faustus’ tragic flaw is the same!
yes though darth’s flaws were not well shown in the movie version
no they were not, though with the text in my mind I imagined it in the actors looks and gaits and his ambition to have it all.
true. ๐
