Fireballs, Dragons, and Some Coupons for Books

Hi Readers,

We have something weird to share with you, but it’s weird in a good way. At least I think it is, but I’m a fictional character.

This is Ran, Sarn’s son, from the Curse Breaker series. But in our next book, (Curse Breaker Trapped), I’m not his sidekick.

What role do I play?

I’ll get to that in a moment. First, I need to tell you about a couple of odd things that are happening with our books.

What’s happening?

The nice people who run Kobo (an online retailer of ebooks) emailed the Scribe on St Patrick’s day to tell us they’re running a boxed sets sale, and they’ve included Curse Breaker Books 1-3 and Curse Breaker Books 4-6 in the sale for US, CA, NZ, and AU. The promo code is MARCH25, but Curse Breaker Books 4-6 shows up as 50% off.

I guess they are giving different percentages off for different boxed sets. But I wanted to let you know, so you don’t miss us. We’re not listed with the fantasy boxed sets, which is weird. They have us lumped into the new releases at the very bottom of page 2.

I guess we’re too hot for fantasy?

But you don’t need to scroll through that promo page since the titles above link directly to the book pages on Kobo. So if Kobo is your retailer of choice for reading material then, head over to take advantage of this deal.

The next one is more straightforward, at least it is for this fictional character. (I’m easily confused!)

The same day that we heard from Kobo, another online ebook retailer named Smashwords emailed us. They’re running a special promo on a selection of fantasy books, and they included Curse Breaker Books 1-3, Curse Breaker Books 4-6, and His Angelic Keeper Books 1-3 in it also.

What an interesting coincidence, right?

To get the discount on their site, you need to use a coupon code. But the coupon codes are right there on the book pages for all to see. (They don’t have the same coupon for some mysterious reason.)

But there are no other shenanigans, and it’s the same discount for all three boxed sets. And you can use the coupon as many times as you want. I linked to those boxed sets on Smashwords above, so you don’t need to search for them.

I should pause here and mention that we have new covers for all three boxed sets. Why are there new covers?

Well, the Scribe’s full-time job went to this hybrid arrangement that has her commuting to the office 2 days a week, and that leaves us, characters, with nothing to do but stare at our books while she’s gone. We don’t have adventures without our Scribe here to record them.

One day, instead of sitting around all sad and dejected, we looked for books like ours and noticed that our boxed sets don’t look like their peers. Well, we can’t have that. We need to fit in at the ebook store!

So we got new covers. Don’t tell the Scribe. Or at least wait until after payday.

Melinda will find out eventually because our new covers will show up on her e-reader. But we’d like to keep it from her for a while, just until the return period ends. 🙂

And here’s where it gets even weirder. Google Play, another store that sells ebooks has a 25% coupons for the same books. If Google Play is your store for reading material, click the books below to go directly to the promo code redemption page. The promo code will appear with the code already prepopulated in the box thingy:

(We tested this. Don’t worry. No fictional characters were harmed while testing. But there was a random fireball. I’ll get to that in a moment.)

And I gotta ask. How did this happen?

I tried to ask our resident dragon if she had anything to do with this, but she shot a fireball at me. Don’t worry. I ducked.

That was so mean. It was just an innocent question.

I peeked around the door (because our living situation received an upgrade after Curse Breaker Hidden), but other than some smoke drifting in the air and some soot where the fireball had struck the stone wall, there was no damage.

“Why did you do that? You could have hit someone. There are other people living in flats along this corridor.” I folded my arms and scowled. Hopefully, I looked fierce.

“I don’t answer stupid questions,” said the dragon, and she puffed out a smoke ring. It floated toward me.

“Maybe she thinks those retailers are her territory,” Uncle Miren suggested as he peered over my head at the wall and the switching tail of the dragon. She glared at us over her shoulder then stomped away, but nobody rounded the bend before she disappeared and went back to that cyberspace place where she dwelled in between newsletters.

“Did you say something to provoke that?” Uncle Miren pulled me into the flat and closed the door.

“No, I just asked her a question. She didn’t have to get all huffy and spit a fireball at me. That was uncalled for.” I leaned against the door. Glowing runes surrounded it, and more symbols covered the door too. I only knew which one opened the door. The others weren’t important to me, but Papa stared at them every time he opened or closed the door like he was memorizing them.

“Why did you do that?” Uncle Miren flopped onto a chair that had appeared in Nulthir’s flat recently along with a table, some slates, and some chalk.

I explained about the sales and coupons. I wasn’t unhappy about them, but it was strange that three stores decided to do these promos on the same day. But figuring out how they worked took our minds off our Scribe not being here, so I was grateful for the distraction.

“Maybe that’s why she’s mad.”

I stared at my uncle. Had I missed something because nothing I could think of justified that dragon’s anger. “What are you talking about?”

“Maybe she’s mad because those stores decided to run those sales on their own and not because of anything she did.” Uncle Miren grabbed a book from the pile on the table.

Oh. My uncle might have a point there. But if the Newsletter-Dragon didn’t do this, then who did?

I’ll leave you with that question and return to the one I promised to answer at the beginning of the email.

If I’m not Papa’s sidekick in Curse Breaker Trapped, then what role do I play?

Do you have a guess?

Hit reply and tell me! Also, feel free to share these promos with anyone you know who shops on Smashwords, Google Play, or Kobo. 🙂

And yes! The new covers are below. I didn’t forget them! But they don’t link to the promos. Scroll up for them.
