NaNoWriMo, Hard Magic, and warring characters

Hi Readers!

NaNoWriMo started this past week, and you might be wondering what that is. Melinda, your indie fantasy author, and our fearless scribe, explains in a special video where she takes you a short tour of the fall foliage in her corner of New York state because she’s too shy to get on camera. (This is Ran, Sarn’s son, as usual, writing to you on her behalf.)

Melinda also talks about Rogue Ranger, the book she’s writing and she even mentioned fighting with Robin. So it’s not just me saying it. I have receipts! The Scribe admits it more than three times before I wandered away to see what else is going on. And Melinda talks a little about an idea I floated past her this week.

It’s not a new idea. I’ve suggested that she take the issues of our newsletter, which is itself an ongoing story and make it into a book. But without all the promotional stuff. I just want all my updates about us, characters, have been up to. That way, if you missed any of our updates, you could catch up easily.

We could do it diary-style and call it notes from a fictional character or something. Do you want something like that? Or is this one of those ideas that sounds good only to me because I would, of course, star in it since most of the newsletters are from my unique point of view?

When I asked the Scribe about such a book, she didn’t say no like she has in the past. This time, she just said she’d think about it, so that’s like a yes, right?

If we did such a book, there would, of course, have to be new stuff added in, right? So I could get even more page time…

Sorry, I lost the plot there for a moment. I got distracted by all the new scenes I could get in such a book and forgot to tell you what else is in the video. Here’s a short list of what Melinda talks about:

  • What it is NaNoWriMo?
  • Why do authors do NaNoWriMo?
  • How to approach NaNoWriMo (she offers 2 ways)
  • What’s her current WIP? (hint: not a book about me)
  • Is she doing NaNoWriMo?
  • What is hard magic?
  • What is a hard magic system?
  • Are her characters behaving?
  • Why does she publish books?
  • And more!

Robin posted the 10th chapter from Rogue Ranger, the action-packed wild ride that is her third book on Patreon for your reading pleasure. Can she and Shade work together? Or will they destroy each other and take Sarn down with them?

I, of course, hope they leave my papa out of their shenanigans, but I don’t get a vote.

Melinda also narrated and posted chapter 15 of Curse Breaker Enchanted, and you can listen to that here.

As always, if you prefer to listen on the go, you can listen to chapter 15 on your favorite podcast platform. Find all the links here.

And that’s what your favorite characters have been up to. Robin and Melinda are still arguing about everything, and I’m trying to get more page time. Every day that goes by without my name appearing on a new page of a story, is a day lost.

Since I’m fictional, I only exist when you read about me, so I need all the page time I can get, so I don’t fade away!

Speaking of my books, Curse Breaker Books 7-9 should be out soon. I went back and checked the dates in the email I sent on my Scribe’s behalf to Amazon to unpublish Curse Breaker Revealed from Kindle Vella, and I think in my next email, I will have good news about that boxed set/omnibus and a publish date.

Cross your fingers! I think we could publish it within the next week. I’ll keep checking.

What is the correct term for it? Can I call a set of 3 novels that aren’t in a box a boxed set? Is the correct word omnibus since all three books are in one books?

If anyone knows, please tell me! I’d love to use the right term for it, and so would our Scribe.

That’s all for this week.

This is Ran, Sarn’s son and sidekick, signing off!
