Hi Readers,
When we’re between books, or scenes, we often visit our Scribe, Melinda Kucsera, in your world, and when we have no preview for you, we like to show you what we get up while we’re there. So that’s what we’re doing this week.
But first some updates:
We have brand new, beautiful covers for:
- Curse Breaker: Enchanted
- Curse Breaker: Faceted
- Curse Breaker: Falls
- Curse Breaker: Sundered
- Curse Breaker: Books 1-4
All 5 covers will replace the current covers along with newly edited versions. They will not be released as new editions, so if you bought a copy from Amazon, the new cover and edits should appear on your device when they are released.
Why’s this taking so long?
Well, the designer just completed the cover for Curse Breaker: Books 1-4 on Saturday. Also, Curse Breaker: Enchanted is really long, (about 155,000 words), and our Scribe’s writing style has changed a lot over the course of our books. Enchanted is very close to her heart. It’s the only one of our books her late sister read parts of before she passed away in 2014. Her late sister’s birthday is coming up at the end of September, so Melinda might be having a hard time letting go of that book.
But it’s the first book in the series, so I can’t really fault her for that. (This is Ran, one of the stars of Curse Breaker: Enchanted.) But if she doesn’t hurry up and finish editing Enchanted, I might just pry it away from her and publish the changes myself. No book is ever perfect. There’s always something else to edit, but should that something hold up the works?
I don’t think so, but I’m just a fictional character who wants his next book finished, so Papa and I and Uncle Miren can go on a non-world-ending adventure that’s purely for the fun of it. Papa owes me a nice adventure, and I’ll get it in the sequel to Curse Breaker: Hidden. So I want to get to that.
Our Scribe works full time, so she only has a few hours each night to work on our books. She can either edit or write, but she doesn’t have time to do both. So that’s why I am eager for her to finish all the editing and get back to writing.
But it’s time we got back to the adventure in progress. When you last saw us in between previews, we were facing an evil couch. Yes, you read that right. It’s not one of our finest moments. Nor is this a fight we chose.
Papa, Uncle Miren and I were just watching Melinda and her dad break up an old couch when my digital nemesis, the Newsletter-Dragon, took Melinda’s cellphone and flew into the couch. Both the couch and the dragon laughed at us.
Now, it’s up to us, your favorite trio, to get that phone back. Let’s find out if we pry it from that couch’s clutches:
The Possessed Couch Vs. the Mage, Round 2
(Missed a part? Catch up here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3)
Uncle Miren and Papa continued their whispered conference as if they hadn’t heard my offer of help. But my uncle had, because he winked at me. Uh-oh, what did he have in mind?
“What are you plotting?” I banged on my magical prison. It was a green-glowing shield Papa had hastily thrown up around me. Since the shield fully enclosed me, I couldn’t go anywhere. Papa liked to keep me safe, but this was a little much even for him. “Papa?”
Papa held up a hand to either acknowledge me or forestall any more protests. I couldn’t tell which because he faced Uncle Miren, not me. But he didn’t retract the shield. Bummer.
While they were talking, the Newsletter-Dragon poked her blue-glowing head out between the couch cushions. She laughed when she saw me. I folded my arms and glared at that damned dragon until her head vanished into the couch again. What was she planning?
A burst of green magic struck the middle of the couch, and it laughed. Papa used to avoid using his magic for anything except finding things and using that map he carried around inside his head. In those days, he didn’t need to shield me with magic. But that was before.
The events in Curse Breaker: Sundered and the forthcoming Curse Breaker: Hidden changed the way he thought about magic. He used more of it in the first six books of the Curse Breaker series than in my entire life up until that point.
Papa thew another bolt of power at that couch—something he wouldn’t have done before. He used to hide his magic and himself, but Curse Breaker: Hidden gave him some much-needed confidence. Unfortunately, his magic had no effect on the couch.
I thought about pointing that out. But if I did, he might try to find a non-magical solution to defeat the possessed couch, and I didn’t want that. Magic is cool, and Papa has tons of it. He should use it all the time for everything. So I kept my observations to myself. “Hit it again,” I said when a third bolt didn’t follow the first two.
Papa glanced at me, and I waved to my green-glowing prison. He didn’t need the magic he used to maintain it. Papa had plenty of magic inside him that wasn’t doing anything except make his green eyes glow.
“Stay there. We’ve got this,” he said finally. Papa had a plan all right. I could see it in his eyes.
“What’s the plan?” I waved to the couch. So far, it hadn’t grown limbs or attacked us, but who knew what the evil spirit possessing it could do.
“You’ll see.” Uncle Miren winked, then he had the audacity to smile at me. No fair. Why was he in on it and not me? I’m Papa’s sidekick, not him.
While I tried my hardest to stare down my teenage uncle and pull words from my quiet Papa, I didn’t notice the pinkish patio stones had sunk into the earth until the couch followed them.
“No!” shouted the couch. A boulder pushed up through the ground, propelled by the green magic under it, and slammed into the underside of the couch.
Papa hadn’t moved at all during this, but now he gripped handfuls of air and pulled, and his magic ripped the metal springs off the frame. A green glow wrapped around the top of the boulder, reshaping it into a point, and I finally got it. I just hoped the evil spirit inhabiting the couch hadn’t also figured out Papa’s plan.

We’ll be back next week with the next installment of our battle with a possessed couch. We still have that evil spirit to deal with. I have a feeling it will make an appearance next week. See you there!
